I have been working on it very hard, and it looks so great!

Making a "real" website is crazy hard. I had NO idea what I was getting into. Themes, css, html codes, urls, etc..etc, no wonder people take classes on this stuff. I got a crash course from a good friend, and the "For Dummies" book, and played around ALOT. I think I have it just the way I want it for now...and cant wait to add more stuff.

I am hoping that everyone will continue to follow me on the new site....as I will be disco'ing this one when the new one is up.

Things to look forward too...

pics, music videos, recipes, hunting stories, product reviews....all in an easy to read format.

Hugs Everyone, and THANK YOU for your support!!

Lindsay

Rants N Raves

Okay, so I had a tiny meltdown this morning while driving to work with my husband. We carpool to save gas, plus its nice for us to have time for Adult Discussion.
My husband has a good high school friend who does some guiding, and taxidermy. He mentioned taking me out for a boar hunt, which would be my first EVER. The thought of it makes me want to jump up and down!!!
Hubby has assured me that he will set something up. But here is my complaint. My children are young and I love them to pieces. However, its healthy for Mama to get out on her own once it a while to pursue a dream I have had for a few years now. I would Love to be able to go with my husband. I want to be able to have him there to support me, and be proud of me. He was there on my first pheasant hunt, and it was awesome.

Our problem is that we dont have any family here to take care of the wee ones while we are shootin it up. Mine is all up in Alaska, and Texas, and Nevada. Hubby's sister is in Idaho. My in laws live right around the corner, but they are retired..in their late 60's and dont have the energy to run around after a three and six year old all the time. They do watch them from time to time, but I feel uncomfortable asking because I know it takes alot out of them.

When Hubby goes to hunt...he doesnt need me there for support, and sometimes I wonder If a girl is allowed in a mans hunting camp. The talk around the fire can be funny....but you know how guys can get.

So...my question to all the ladies out there in my situation....what do you do? I can hunt by myself. But I am sooo very new at this, and would love to have my husband by my side on my first few hunts. Do I take the kids? What if they ask to go potty? Or what if they get tired, or hungry...or bored, and whiney. Is it even safe to take small kids boar hunting? I heard they were pretty nasty when pissed off. Besides that, I wouldnt be able to concentrate.

Hubby says he will take me up to go hunting, and watch the kids while I go out. So, I get to hunt, but not the way I want. That is better than nothing, and I should stop whining. I am getting to do what I want, Right?

Just Curious if anyone else has had this situation, and what did you do about it, and how did it make you feel?

Honestly...I feel better now. Thanks for Listenting.

Set Your DVRS to RECORD!!

Schedule your DVR's to record Good Day Sacramento Channel 31 This Friday 1/29/10 from 7-8 am. I shot a full round, keeping both eyes open and failed miserably.
Bernie, the president at ATC, graciously spent an hour working with myself, Lindsay, and Brooke. He first showed us how to test for our dominate eye. Luckily, all of us were using the correct eye for sighting. In a soaking drizzle, he coached us through each station showing us stance, proper mount of the gun, and muzzle placement over the trap box. Here are some of the tips that I will take to my next round of trap:

1) When shooting from station 1, your stance is open. Meaning your left foot (right handed shooter) and hips are pointed more toward the left, right foot back at shoulder width. Lean forward, weight on the left foot. As you move to station 2, your left foot is now more in front of you. Station 3, left foot directly in front. Station 4, left foot and hips are more to the right, and by station 5, left foot and hips more to the right. Remember to have a comfortable, shoulder width stance.

2) When mounting the gun, make sure that the stock is tucked between you shoulder and collar bone right over your bra strap. Tightly place your chin on the stock, and pull the stock in place with your right hand (right handed shooter).

3) When sighting down the barrel, you should not see the ribs or ridges, only the bead at the end. If you can see those ridges, your head's too high- adjust your head, lower your cheek on the stock. Do not focus on the bead, look out into the distance.

4) At station 1, place the muzzle, on the left corner of the trap box. Station 2, muzzle is between left corner and middle of box. Station 3, middle of box. 4, between right corner and middle. And station 5, muzzle over the right corner.

5) Before calling "Pull", breath and think about stance, sight, and muzzle location. As the clay flies out, swing through the clay, covering it with your muzzle and "BANG! You got it!" Don't stop moving the barrel, and don't pull your head to see if you hit it.
These tips really helped me, and I can't wait to try again!!!

Trisha
_______________________________________________________________________________
On Sunday at the Trap club, Lindsay, Trish and I met up for some pre-news shooting and comradery. We tried to shoot an entire round with our eyes open, looking out into the trees, without an ounce of success. After we finished the first round, and were defrosting by the fire we were asked by Janene if we had ever had an official shooting lesson. None of had, so she suggested we ask her husband, Bernie, who is the President of Auburn Trap Club. He graciously agreed to give us some pointers. He started out by helping us determine which eye was our dominant shooting eye. I had done this before, but not quite the same way. He took a piece of paper and cut a hole in the middle about the size of an oreo cookie. We held the paper up until we had his entire face evenly in the middle. He said the eye that he could see when he was looking at us was our dominant eye. Lucky for the three of us, we were looking down the barrel with the right eye open :)

Then we headed to the five stand. Trish went first, then Lindsay and finally it was my turn. He had me start by shooting off a round how we normally do. He said that my gun fit me well, and that my positioning looked good also. I fired my first round and totally missed. He told me that I had moved my face of the gun after I fired, which pulled my head and my alignment right along with it. He told me to push my cheek tighter against the stock for the next one. I started off great, but pulled my cheek off again. At this point I was a nervous wreck and totally embarrassed, so the next round was just as much fun. He finally ended up telling me to pretend that I was shooting at a bird and that my starving families survival depended on me killing this animal. Yeah, so my poor family was going to end up starving to death because I missed that one too! I took a couple of deep breaths, centered my concentration and nailed the next one. Over the next 4 stations, I had the same issue with pulling my head off the gun and occasionally having the stock too low on my shoulder, which throws off your alignment on every level.

At the end of our lesson, Bernie was kind enough to let all of us shoot a couple of rounds with his amazing and super not so cheap shotgun :) His had an extra piece of wood to rest your cheek against so you didn't have to pull the gun so far up on your shoulder. The first round I nailed right out of the hanger, the next one was a little reminder of the importance of keeping your face firmly against the gun. I did my traditional 'lift off' after I fired and the cheek rest (not sure of the official name for this piece :) came back and smacked me! Ha! That was a pretty good lesson for me....KEEP YOUR FACE ON THE GUN!!

Brooke
_________________________________________________________________________________

Sunday morning was probably the most fun I have had trapshooting in while. It was raining, and I had shot and missed most of the targets in the first round because I was trying to shoot with both eyes open. Feeling a little embarrased I walked up to the Clubhouse to warm up with Brooke and Trish.
We hit up Bernie, NRA Shotgun instructor, who agreed to give all three of us a lesson for free. WOOHOO!

First he helped us to determine that all three of us are right handed shooters, who are left eye dominant. I asked him if that was pretty common. His answer.."No, actually". It made us all feel better because several times we have been told that we should be shooting with both eyes open. Bernie told us that we would never be able to..and to continue closing our left eyes to shoot. That is when we all took a deep breath. Whew! We are WAY better when we close our eyes, and now we know why.

It was pretty cool to watch Bernie, watch us, and then tell us what we are doing wrong. And he was right, every time. When we made the corrections he suggested, we blasted em. I think he actually told Brooke "You smoked em, you just didnt see it cause its raining".

I now know that I need to slow down before I shoot, breathe, line up my beads, then look into the trees, yell pull, and then raise my gun smoothly, but swiftly, never stopping. I should be squeezing my trigger alot faster than I usually do. At one point he said, You are going to say pull, and then I am going to tell you when to shoot. The first time, I NAILED it! The second time I didnt, and he laughed and said "shoot means shoot girl." I too have to be careful I dont take my cheek off the stock...and make sure I stay smooth as I bring my barrel up to the clay. Dont stop the gun once you pull the trigger. IF you do, you are behind it.
He actually told me that my gun might be a little long for me too, but to not worry about it. I think I might look into getting it fitted to me. I've heard it really helps.

The highlight of the day was when we got to shoot Bernies gun. He just asked that we didnt drop it. I was pretty happy that I didnt, especially after finding out what it would cost to replace it. Of course, I didnt hit a thing with it, but when handed to my husband...he blew those clays to shreds!

Bernie was so patient with us. It was really awesome to learn from him, and actually make the changes he suggested, and see the improvements firsthand. I dont even remember being cold or wet until I got into the car to leave. We didnt have time to shoot a second round...but I cannot wait to put his lessons to the test this Friday.

My husband keeps saying he wants to bet me...first to hit 25/25, but I dont think I am quite ready. Two problems, though. First, as a woman pheasant hunter, the vests were always too big. Even the smalls were sagging off the shoulders and bulging around the waist. Second, we all know that to get to the pheasants, you have to exert a lot of energy, and California's climate is too warm for a regular hunting vest. My first time out in the Mother Light Vest, I immediately noticed the lightweight comfort and manueverablility I'd been missing. Size small fit my 5'10'' frame perfectly. Some of the features I enjoy most are the magnetic side pockets which made reloading a breeze. Also, the waist strap took the weight of the birds and equipment off my lower back which made for an enjoyable hunt. Finally, the many pockets and chest-strap, with handy dog whistle, are great features. There is a place which holds a hydration pack (sold separately), but I went without. This is very convenient, though, if you need to hydrate yourself and dog! List price is $79, and I purchased mine at Sportsman's Warehouse.

Happy hunting!

Birds Limited

Since the girls and I didnt get drawn for the womens hunt on Grizzly Island...we were determined to find a place to hunt, even if it meant paying for it. We contacted a few places and finally landed a great deal at Birds Limited. Its located north of Roseville out near Baseline road. We got a better deal if we had more people, so we asked the hubbies to go...and they said yes. It would be the first time Dan and I would hunt together.

We arrived at the club at 7:30. They have a great little "Clubhouse". We would soon learn...its sort of a "Good Ol' Boys Club". Berny and his wife Cathy checked us in and got us ready to go. We would be out with Dave and his dog Jonny, and Mike and his dog Sug.

I've never hunted with Brittany's before. What great dogs. They keep going and going and going. Good noses too! We soon found out what great shots our husbands were. Stefanies husband Erik is like 8 ft tall, and could practically reach out and grab the things out of the sky. I always used to make fun of my husbands old green shotgun. Not anymore....he shot the hell out of that thing, and didnt even use a whole box of shells. I wont tell you how many I used. Between all of us, we brought in 7 birds for the morning hunt.

Around noon, Berny called us in for lunch. He has this Gigantic BBQ that he uses for catering weddings, as well as bbq' ing for the club. Lunch was pork tenderloin sandwiches. YUM!! While we ate, Dave cleaned our birds for us.....Very nice!

The afternoon hunt was a blast! The dogs seemed to go on point everywhere. We were hunting into the sun at one point. I was getting a tiny bit frustrated, because I still wonder sometimes how great of a shot I am. At one point, our backs were to the sun, and a bird flushed and flew behind me. I turned, looked almost at the sun, and blew that thing out of the sky!! Whew....I did it. I ended up shooting three birds myself that day. I think Dan helped me on one of them.
Stefanie and Trish were knocking em dead...too! But I have to say, the guys were the stars that day.
We brought in 10 more birds for the afternoon, which Dave cleaned for us. We tipped our guides, and thanked them for an awesome day, and headed home. Sunday night I made Pheasant noodle soup. Delish, and even my kids ate it.

Birds limited does day hunts....which is what we paid for as non-members. They are open 6 days a week for their members. Berny did his best to try and get us to become members. I wouldnt mind.....we had a blast, and everyone was super friendly. Becoming a member at a club is very expensive, and I will probably check out a few more before I decide on my favorite.

Happy Hunting!!

New Website Link posted

We just posted a new link to the DFG website (Department of Fish and Game). Dept of Fish and Game hosted a womens only hunt in the Delta. They hosted 30-50 women and young lady hunters. It was so great to see so many female hunters in one spot! It made me feel like I was a part of something very special.
We arrived about shortly after 7:00 am. The area was bustling with activity. Dogs barking, Orange everywhere, target practice, ladies meeting new friends.
DFG had a gentleman with an automatic clay pigeon thrower out there so you could target practice before the real deal started. Before the hunt the game warden held a safety talk. Safety was the topic of the day, and a great reminder to all hunters. One thing that was good to know...when your out in the field and a game warden comes up to chat with you....please unload your gun. Not only is it safer, but a good sign of respect too.
The local chapter of Pheasants Forever had many volunteer dog handlers. Women of all ages could hunt with an experienced hunter and his/her dog. We got to go out with Max and Trapper. Max was a SUPER cool guy. I am sure that he poses as Santa at christmas, cause his long white beard was fantastic! Max had so much knowledge and patience with us. He always stayed positive. Instead of saying..."Darn, you missed it", he would say "Right on, we found one...good job, lets keep trying." He also showed us what Stinging Nettle is and taught us to STAY AWAY from it. Apparently it causes major burns and pain to skin. It can even hurt a dog pretty good. If you have ever seen a marijuana plant..it kinda looks like that.
His pooch Trapper is a four year old German Wirehair Pointer. To see this dog work was amazing. He would go in anything. NO really, ANYTHING.....bushes, stickers, water, mud, trees, ditches, etc. What a nose too!! He was really good about pointing the birds. His only downfall was letting us have the bird back after retrieval. But hey...a dog has to have some bragging rights...right? especially after all that work. Renee brought her Weimaraner, Roxie. Roxie is in training still but has a great nose for pheasants.
The first bird of the day was shot by both me and trish. I called it mine cause I swear I saw that bird start to go down after my shot. Trisha nailed the next two birds...she did some great shooting. And looked very cute in her new hunting vest. The fourth bird flew up. Trisha shot and missed, and then I shot and hit. Then I looked over to realize that Trisha shot again at the same time I did. It felt like I shot it, So I am just going to say it was mine. Renee shot the 5th bird of the day...she was pretty proud of herself, and jumped up and down! Trisha got the whole thing on video too. I wont tell you about the number of birds we missed...becuase it was several. But one more important thing to remember...ALWAYS remember to take the safety off when the bird flushes right in front of you. Damn!
We saw every kind of terrain that day. We started out in the corn fields. It was okay to walk in, but be careful not to trip. Those stalks will jump out and get you. However,If you get hungry...just pick up a cob and nibble. J/K :) Then we hunted in what we called "Snow Grass". First you think its nice soft grass..and you just want to lay down in it. But then you realize its really 1 1/2 ft deep, and a pain in the butt to walk in. Imagine walking in deep snow...thats what its like. Then there was the desert. Dont try to follow the pheasant tracks...those birds are confused, and walk in circles. Right after the desert was the marsh...thank goodness for dogs.
After several hours of hunting, Trish and I both had our limit and we were all hungry and tired. We hiked back to the trucks, had lunch and cleaned our birds. Poultry shears are a very handy device to have. I am so glad I picked some up. Much better than dulling your knife while cutting through wings. Max had several great bird cleaning tips and taught us a thing or two.
We went out again to try and get Renee her second bird....but after an hour or so...we all agreed it was time to go.
I posted pics and videos of everything.
Trish, Renee, and I had a great time. I am very thankful for these opportunities that the DFG has put on. Its my goal to get the information out there to as many interested women as possible.
